Anthemion Tours’ English walking tours reveal Nice through its architecture and history, from Baroque Vieux Nice (Old Town) to the Belle Époque landmarks that shaped the modern city.
For more than a decade, I’ve been helping travelers discover cities through their architecture. My tours aren’t about memorizing dates or listening to a list of facts. They’re about learning how to read a city – understanding who built it, why they built it, and what those buildings can tell us about the people who lived there.
Every city leaves clues behind. In Nice, those clues are hidden in church façades, apartment buildings, street plans, decorative details, and even the pieces that are missing. My goal is to help you see them. By the end of the tour, you’ll never look at a city the same way again.
Most visitors walk past the history of Nice without realizing it. At Anthemion, we are obsessed with the stories buildings tell. From the humble 18th-century fisherman’s cottage along the sea to the bold Art Deco palaces that announced tourism’s rise in the early 20th century.
The Anthemion Perspective: An anthemion is a decorative motif dating back to Ancient Greece, depicting a honeysuckle flower in bloom. It was used throughout history whenever architecture sought to promote balance, strength, and classic beauty. We chose this as our name because it reflects the timeless architectural heritage we explore. Once you know what to look for, the city transforms into a living museum.
Our Standard: No megaphones. No scripts. Each tour connects architecture to the people, forces, and moments that shaped the Riviera through intimate, intelligent dialogue.
Step into the historic heart of the city to decode a district where Italian influence, Baroque theater, and centuries of Mediterranean life are woven into every stone. The spectacle of Baroque churches, the “Italianate” 17th-century residential palaces of the House of Savoy, and the secret engineering of medieval alleys.
Revisit the golden age when Nice became the “Winter Salon of Europe” for the world’s aristocracy. Discover the Belle Époque city of grand hotels, seaside promenades, and Beaux-Arts landmarks built to welcome Europe’s royal courts and cultural elite.
Anthemion itineraries are not mere strolls; they are carefully curated narratives. With a foundation in historical inquiry and urban evolution, our approach focuses on the intersection of people, politics, and design.
Having established premier architectural programs in major heritage centers like New Orleans, I bring a comparative perspective to the streetscapes of Nice. I combine meticulous research with a love for storytelling to reveal the elegance, history, and hidden gems that standard guidebooks miss.
You do not need any specialized skills or architectural background. We translate the history of these areas and the people who lived here into compelling human stories.
Each tour is a leisurely stroll of approximately 1-1.5 miles. We walk at a very comfortable pace through the city’s most picturesque neighborhoods.
